Can you add five matches to six matches and make nine?

Place six matches on the table so that they form a row as shown. Lay the other five ¡n a pile. Tell your friends to add these five to the other six, without moving the row. and make nine.

If they have not succeeded in a reasonable length of time, tell them that you thought anyone could spell "nine!" Then show them.
