| The Pyramid Trick |
Can you lift a pyramid of three matches with a fourth match?
Slit the untreated end of the first match, and whittle the untreated end of the second match to a flat wedge. Force the wedge of the second match into the slit in the first match. You will now have an inverted V.
Now form the pyramid by standing these joined matches head down on the table and placing the third match head down, so that the end of it rests at the top.
Place the fourth match under the peak of the pyramid. Very gently and slowly, push the two matches that formed the inverted V away from the third match in the pyramid. You will see the third match fall into the throat of the V. Now raise the match, which is in your hand, and you, will find you can pick up all three.
Materials: Four kitchen matches and a small paring knife. This is a good trick, but it requires a steady hand, and you should practice it before trying it on your friends.
